Zael lowered the lens from his eye and sighed. Roughing it out in the wilderness was nothing new, but it definitely wasn’t a favored outcome. On clear warm nights like this, though, nothing beat looking up at the vast night sky with all its twinkling stars.

Just looking at the dark expanse of it calmed him, made all his problems seem to fade away.

Having company definitely made roughing it out here more tolerable, too. Beside him, laying on the grass, Dagran shared in the same view. And that on its own was a bigger comfort. Through it all, he at least didn’t have to be out here — didn’t have to come all this way — alone. Zael sometimes found himself wondering where he’d be if Dagran hadn’t taken him in. Nowhere good, he’d reckon. In a hole somewhere, starving, barely making it.

'Thank you,' never felt like enough for how the man next to him changed his whole life. Zael stuck to actions more to show all he could add to the mercenary cause. The smiles Dagran sent him, pats on the head or back when he’d done something good or great ended up the best reward in the end.
